Arriving in Rome late in the day, I had barely enough time to drop my bags at the hostel and grab a quick dinner. But when dawn broke the next morning, disappointment hit hard with a feverish wave of weakness. Determined not to waste my fleeting time in the Eternal City, I shrugged off my illness with a defiant "fuck it." Who knew if I'd ever get another chance to explore Rome?
So there I was, a mix of sickness and delirium, stumbling through ancient streets. It's something I couldn't imagine doing now at 49, but in those youthful days, my body seemed invincible. To all you young souls out there, cherish that vitality—it truly opens doors.

With no plan in mind, I embarked on a spontaneous odyssey through Rome, where history gracefully unfurls at every corner. My fevered wanderings led me, quite accidentally, to the Pantheon. Picture this: me, dazed and confused, trailing a stream of visitors into what seemed like a grand cathedral—only to realize I had stumbled upon the architectural marvel of the Pantheon. It was a moment of awe amidst illness, surrounded by hushed reverence. The dome's celestial design, crafted to welcome natural light as a divine connection, left me spellbound. In that silent sanctuary, I felt a spiritual tether, uniting me with centuries of worshippers past.
And so, my feverish pilgrimage continued. Vatican City beckoned, where I marveled at Michelangelo's masterpieces in St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Though my memories are now faint, those days remain etched in the mosaic of my mind. In just 48 hours, I crisscrossed Rome's timeless landmarks—the Pantheon, Vatican City, the Spanish Steps, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain. Yet, amidst the rush, I missed so much, reminders of Rome's endless allure.

So, take it from me: when in Rome, sometimes the best plan is no plan at all. Let history guide you, for every street corner here whispers tales of emperors and artists, saints and sinners. Embrace the unexpected, and let Rome weave its magic.
Stay tuned for my sweet romance I had in Capri!
